Reliable performance every day in a demanding recycling environment

Anyone who steps onto the grounds of Maag Recycling AG in Winterthur immediately senses that recycling here is not an abstract concept, but precision work carried out every day. Trucks arrive throughout the day, rail wagons need loading, and a constant flow of paper, glass, scrap metal, aluminum cans and other recyclable materials must be processed efficiently. On a site where space is limited and conditions change constantly, dependable equipment is essential.

“The variety of materials makes our work interesting, but also demanding," says Managing Director Judith Maag. "We need machines that can handle many different tasks reliably.”

Built for a demanding environment

Recycling places heavy demands on machinery. Abrasive materials, dust, glass particles, sharp edges and changing weather all take their toll. At the same time, incoming material cannot be planned precisely, which requires operators to respond in an agile way throughout the day. Downtime has an immediate impact on our operation,” says Maag. “Our machines need to be productive, economical and, above all, reliable.”

Since June 2026, Maag Recycling has been using the Komatsu WA170M-11 compact wheel loader for paper and glass recycling, scrap handling and can processing. Its compact dimensions and manoeuvrability suit the site's confined layout, while its lifting performance allows operators to load rail wagons around 4.1 m high.

“The machine is responsive, powerful and agile,” Maag explains. “Those qualities are important when several activities are taking place at the same time in a relatively small area.”

Technology that works with the operator

For Maag Recycling, practical usability is just as important as performance. “We want modern technology, but we don't want unnecessary complexity," says Maag. "The machine should be easy to operate and dependable in everyday use."

Alongside its investment in equipment, Maag Recycling also places a strong emphasis on people. The fourth-generation family business has specialised in industrial recycling for almost 80 years and today employs around 70 people. In addition to operating an industrial recycling facility, an electronics dismantling centre and a public recycling yard, the company is recognised for its commitment to social integration, offering employment opportunities to people with physical or psychological disabilities.

That people-first culture is equally reflected on the operating floor. During the visit, operators Viktoria Repova and Tania Pianese shared their experience with the Komatsu WA170M-11. Here at Maag Recycling, female operators are not exceptions, but an integral part to a modern working environment where everyone is given the opportunity to demonstrate their competence and build their careers based on skill, experience and operational excellence. “Operators become familiar with this machine easily, because it struck just the right balance between innovation and ease of use. It’s not overloaded with features, and this is especially important because operators alternate between machines frequently” says Maag.

The rear-view camera has also improved visibility and safety for operators around the busy recycling yard. Additionally, the air conditioning and machine’s compatibility with their existing high-tip bucket contribute to operator comfort and productivity throughout the working day.

Support beyond the machine

The WA170M-11 has also impressed the team when it comes to maintenance and support. Its tilting cab and wide-opening engine hood provide straightforward access for daily servicing, making routine inspections quicker and easier. Introducing a new machine into daily operations was equally smooth. Maag Recycling appreciated the comprehensive handover, operator orientation and training, helping the team become familiar with the machine.

The company also values the support surrounding the investment. Before taking delivery, the team visited Komatsu Germany Construction in Hannover, where they had the opportunity to test the WA170M-11 and gain insight into its manufacturing process. “The visit gave us confidence in both the machine and the people behind it," says Maag.

After several months in operation, her assessment is clear: “The WA170M-11 fits our application very well. It's the right size for our site, versatile enough for different tasks and performs reliably every day.”
